Greyson Metz’s recruitment took a big step forward on Sunday. The Class of 2020 Illinois linebacker picked up an Iowa scholarship offer during his junior day visit.

The Hawkeyes became the first Power 5 school to present him with an opportunity. It meant a lot.

“The Iowa offer was really an exciting point in my recruiting, and I think it’s huge in terms of getting exposure to Power 5 schools. I’m really fortunate that the coaches see my future and want to develop me as a player,” he told HN.

In the fast world of recruiting, Metz (6-3, 190) can be considered a late bloomer. He doesn’t have a ranking from Rivals or 247. College coaches are just catching on to the Glen Ellyn (IL) Glenbard West High playmaker.

Illinois State’s scholarship offer in January was his first. He’s slowly added opportunities from Northern Illinois, Air Force, Western Michigan, and FCS and Ivy League schools.

Iowa sees him as a Big-Ten level talent.

“The coaches recognized me as a kid that they can develop and turn into a big-time player. Iowa has a long history of finding recruits that can grow into big roles. They also like my football IQ and understanding of the game,” he said.

Metz enjoyed learning about the Hawkeye culture and felt it fit him well.

“The type of people on their coaching staff stood out the most. They have a clear plan and were great at showing recruits the tradition they have built there,” he said.

“I was really pumped after the visit, and I can’t wait to get back. The coaches are extremely genuine and made me feel very comfortable.”

An all-conference performer as a junior, Iowa projects Metz as an outside linebacker. He’s athletic and moves well, sideline to sideline.

“Iowa’s defense is gritty and consistent. They understand what it takes to be one of the top defenses in the country, and they have a blueprint for success,” he said.

Metz is visiting Northwestern on Saturday and hopes to get to Michigan State during the next few weeks. With his late start in the recruiting process, he’s catching up.

“I don’t have a timeline on decision, but I feel like I need to see as many schools as quick as I can in order to have a clear plan,” he said.

An academic all-state member, Metz is interested in majoring in Business, perhaps with a focus on Economics. He looks forward to learning more about what the Hawkeyes offer in that area.

“I hope to get back to Iowa sometime in the springtime, or at the latest in the summer. I’m really looking forward to going back there and developing my relationship with the coaching staff,” he said.

Here’s a look at Metz’s junior highlights. He plays for the same high school that gave the Hawkeyes safety Matt Bowen:
