Hawkeyes Getting Official Visit from Alabama Running Back

Iowa found out Thursday night that Ohio running back Kay’ron Adams was canceling his official visit. He decided to stick with his verbal commitment to Rutgers, which he made in early September.

Adams isn’t the only Class of 2019 running back on the Hawkeyes’ board, however. Alabama’s Shadrick Byrd is something they’ve thought highly of for some time.

Hawkeye position coach Derrick Foster, an Alabama native, and offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz conducted an in-home visit with the Alabaster (AL) Thompson High standout last week. Friday afternoon, Byrd let us know he would be starting an official visit to Iowa on Saturday morning.

“I’ve been talking with Coach Foster for awhile. He’s been contacting me,” Byrd told HN last week.

The early signing day for high school seniors runs from Wednesday to Friday of next week. The Hawkeyes have 16 known verbal commitments and probably will end up with about 20 prospects in the cycle.

Byrd will be hoping to land a scholarship offer from Iowa on his visit. The Hawkeyes prefer waiting until prospects from far away visit before extending the opportunity. Vanderbilt, Troy and Wake Forest are the other schools he’s considering.

“I feel good (about Iowa). My options are open right now since I’ll be an early enrollee,” Byrd said last week.

He plans on majoring in Sports Medicine.

Rivals and 247 both view Byrd as a three-star prospect. The latter sees him as the No. 83 player at his position nationally in the ’19 recruiting class.
