Hawkeyes Jump into Mix for Defensive Lineman Jeremiah Pittman

Iowa made Jeremiah Pittman aware of their recruiting approach. The Hawkeyes proceed more deliberately in evaluating prospects and don’t hand out as many scholarship offers as most school across the country.

Pittman, a junior defensive lineman from Arlington Heights (IL) St. Viator, remained patient. It paid off this week.

Iowa extended to him an opportunity on Tuesday. He didn’t see it coming.

“I’d been in contact with (assistant coach) Seth Wallace, and I knew they had a bit of a slower process,” Pittman told HN. “So, I was excited to get it a little bit on short notice.”

Iowa, like other programs across the country, have adjusted to sports being shut down by the coronavirus. It normally would be bringing prospects onto campus right now during spring football, but with it being canceled it’s handing out some scholarships to players it feels good about without being able to do that.

While Pittman still has a lot more to learn about Iowa, he likes what he’s finding out already.

“I’ve heard their atmosphere at the games is unheard of, especially since Iowa has no pro team,” he said.

So far, Wallace is the only member of the Iowa staff with whom Pittman has spoken. The linebacker coach has impressed the prospect.

“I like his honesty and calmness,” Pittman said.

Pittman plans on visiting Iowa. There’s a lot more he wants to find out about the Hawkeyes.

“I’m looking to actually meet coaches in person and get a feel for what practices are like,” he said.

Pittman also reports scholarship offers from Boston College, Iowa State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Syracuse, Texas Tech and others.

“I have the most and closest contact with Northwestern, but Iowa State and Minnesota have reached out to me a lot and I love their staffs,” he said.

Pittman is hoping to make his decision before the end of the summer.

“I’m looking for strong academics, on-field success, a supportive coaching staff and somewhere where my faith will grow. There are plenty of schools in the Big Ten where the education is there and they will coach me up to go to the pros, if possible,” he said.

Business and Engineering are the two majors Pittman is considering.

Rivals and 247 rank Pittman (6-2, 260) as a three-star prospect. The former sees him as the 45th best defensive end nationally in the 2021 class and the No. 19 player overall in Illinois for the cycle. The latter puts him as the No. 53 defensive tackle and 23rd in his state.

Here’s a look at Pittman’s junior highlights, which include some clips of him lining up at running back:
