Iowa Adds AJ Lawson to ’20 Recruiting Class

IOWA CITY, Iowa – AJ Lawson showed up Friday for his Iowa official visit. A day later, he was a Hawkeye.

The safety from Decatur (IL) MacArthur High announced his commitment on social media, saying “I also would like to thank the entire Iowa coaching staff for believing in a kid from Decatur, Ill.”

Lawson (6-2, 180) became the 15th known verbal commitment in Iowa’s 2020 recruiting class. It was expected to end up with 20-25 members.

He came to town with strong feelings for the Hawkeyes and it didn’t take long for Lawson to realize he wanted to be a one of them.

“It’s just the feel the coaches have for me. I feel home when I’m in Iowa City. There’s so much love and support,” Lawson told HN.

Lawson also reported scholarship offers from Minnesota and many of the MAC schools. Louisville and Wisconsin had been showing him interest.

Iowa extended to him a scholarship offer back in early May. Assistant Seth Wallace had been leading its recruitment of Lawson.

Rivals and 247 view Lawson as a three-star recruit. The latter lists him as the No. 23 player in Illinois for the ’20 cycle, while the former puts him at No. 25.

Lawson became the Hawkeyes’ fifth known verbal commitment since June 12. He joined Florida’s Keylen Gulley as the other defensive back in the group.
