IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa has stuck its recruiting footprint solidly into talent-rich Indianapolis recently. That trend continued Sunday when linebacker Jay Higgins announced his commitment during an official visit.

Higgins (6-2, 215) became the 17th known verbal commitment in the ’20 class, joining fellow weekend official visitors AJ Lawson and Brenden Deasfernandes in pledging on the trip. The group was expected to finish with about 20-25 members.

“After visiting Iowa, I saw a place were I can easily call home. I was around committed guys, who I quickly became friends with the first day there,” Higgins told HN after his commitment.

The Hawkeyes extended a scholarship offer to Higgins earlier this month. The Brebeuf Jesuit product told HN at the time that it was one he coveted.

“Coach (Kelvin) Bell was my lead recruiter, and he’s been a family favorite since my sophomore year,” he said the earlier interview.

Higgins has accumulated 276 tackles over the last two seasons. He added 18 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and 6 pass breakups.

Air Force, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH), Toledo, Tulane and Western Michigan are the other FBS schools that have reportedly offered Higgins.

Rivals ranks Higgins as a three-star prospect, while 247 sees him as a two-star and the No. 33 player in Indiana for ’20.

Higgins’ father was happy with his son’s decision.
