Mekhi Miller finds himself early in the recruiting process. The Kansas City-area sophomore receiver is looking forward to seeing more college campuses once the dead period ends following the coronavirus pandemic.

He did stop at Notre Dame in October and had previously been to local schools, Kansas and Kansas State. Then he saw Iowa on two occasions. He watched a bowl prep practice during December and came back for a January junior day.

“I really liked the (Hawkeye) coaches and the facilities,” Miller told HN. “The coaches seemed genuine and the facilities were far better than what I expected.”

Kansas and head coach Les Miles stepped up with Miller’s first scholarship offer, which came during March of 2019. Iowa then jumped in with an opportunity on Jan. 22. Nebraska came forward five days after that.

Iowa’s early belief in him carries some weight.

“It meant a lot getting offered by a Big Ten school. It definitely felt good,” he said.

Assistant Kelton Copeland recruits the Kansas City area for the Hawkeyes. He also coaches Miller’s position.

“I think coach Copeland and I have a pretty good relationship. He seems legit, and I like the way he coaches as well,” Miller said.

“Coach Copeland thinks I’d be a good fit with their offense, and I totally agree with them. I like how they’re balanced with the ball. I like the way they use their receivers. I can see myself in their offense,” he said.

Despite being in the Midwest, Miller grew up an Oregon fan.

“I started liking them when (Marcus) Mariota and De’Anthony Thomas were there. I also liked their jerseys,” he said.

Miller caught seven touchdowns as a freshman for Topeka (KS) High. He then transferred to Overland Park (KS) Blue Valley North High, which ended up being controversial.
