Yahya Black Commits to Hawkeyes During Camp Stop

Yahya Black began his first of back-to-back weekend visits with Iowa on Friday. The Minnesota defensive end worked out at the Hawkeyes camp even though he already held a scholarship offer.

He realized shortly after arrival that he didn’t need more convincing during the rest of the month. He announced on Twitter Friday night that he was committing to the Hawkeyes.

“I feel a great energy when I’m there. The coaches are great people. I couldn’t ask for more,” he told HN.

Black’s pledge didn’t come as a surprise. The Marshall (MN) High standout told HN earlier this week that he’d bonded with defensive line coach Kelvin Bell and felt Iowa would bring out the best of him in the future.

“He’s great. He’s a guy that I see will push me to my max. I’m looking for a hard coach, pretty much the same coach (Terry Bahlmann) I’m getting in high school,” Black said during our previous interview.

Black (6-5, 250) unofficially visited the Hawkeyes at the end of March. Assistant Tim Polasek has been teaming up with Bell in their pursuit of the talented prospect.

Kansas State, Minnesota, North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota and South Dakota State also had reportedly offered Black.

Rivals and 247 list Black as a three-star prospect. The former sees him as the No. 7 player in Minnesota for ’20, while the latter places him eighth.

Black became the 12th known verbal commitment in the Hawkeyes’ ’20 recruiting class. He joined Michael Lois, Isaiah Bruce and Logan Jones as defensive linemen in the group.
