IOWA CITY, Iowa – Djimon Colbert, a two-year starter at weak-side linebacker for Iowa Football, has opted out of the 2020 season, HN has learned. The Kansas City native planned on coming back and competing next fall.

Colbert (6-1, 225) started 10 games as a redshirt sophomore in ’18 and then started all 13 contests last season. His 61 tackles (34 solo) ranked fourth on the team for the 10-3 Hawkeyes in ’19. He posted 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, four pass breakups and a quarterback hurry.

Iowa graduated starting middle linebacker Kristian Welch, the team’s leading tackler, off of last year’s squad. Senior Nick Niemann has started 13 games during the last two campaigns, all of them coming at outside linebacker. Senior Barrington Wade has started one game on the outside, the only other linebacker on the current roster to have started. The Hawkeyes lost Dillon Doyle, who started in the middle at Wisconsin last season, as a transfer to Baylor.

There’s a good chance Iowa moves Niemann into the middle in ’20. It also could lean more on the Hybrid Cash position with plenty of depth in the secondary. There are options at linebacker as well.

Wade has played LEO throughout his career but could possibly move inside as could Niemann. Campbell showed potential in his first season in campus in ’19. Redshirt sophomore Seth Benson has performed well on special teams and was listed as Colbert’s backup for the Holiday Bowl in December.

Redshirt sophomore Logan Klemp, redshirt freshman Yahweh Jeudy and true freshman Jay Higgins are other scholarship linebackers who could factor into the equation with Colbert out.
